How To Add A New Page To Your WordPress Website

If you have a WordPress website, you will have noticed that there are two main areas where you add your content ‘Pages’ and ‘Posts’. While they both follow a similar process for adding and updating, they have completely different functions.

Pages are used for static content. Perfect examples of this would are an about or services page. Whereas posts are short articles displayed in date order on your main blog page or homepage.

Today, I wanted to share a quick guide on how to add a new page to your WordPress website. I’ve previously covered ‘how to post a blog on WordPress‘.

Let’s get started…

The first step is to access the pages section of your WordPress dashboard.  You will find this on the left-hand side menu – click on ‘Pages’ and you will be given two options, ‘Add New’ or ‘All Pages’.

  • Add New – This option opens up a blank new page.
  • All Pages – This option takes you to a list of every page currently on your website.

Choose ‘Add New’ to create your new page.

ADDING A NEW PAGE

Now we have a blank ‘Add New Page’. Enter a title for the page, it’s best to keep this short and descriptive. The title you add will automatically generate the permalink (or URL) for the page. You can, however, edit this by clicking the ‘Edit’ button beside the permalink.

In the large box, enter your page content. The editor for pages is identical to the post editor so all the same formatting and options are available for pages.

PAGE ATTRIBUTES

You may want to set your pages up with a hierarchy. For example, you have an about page and want to add subpages for your team and another for your office location. You can set these as sub-pages by editing the ‘Page Attributes’.

On the right-hand side of the page, you will see the ‘Page Attributes’ box. There is are two options you can set.

  • Parent – If your adding subpage, select a ‘Parent’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Order – You can also give your pages an order which will tell WordPress to display them in a certain position. E.g if you want the about page displayed first, you would give it the number ‘1’.
  • Template – Depending on your theme, you may also be able to choose a different layout for the page by selecting a template from the available options.

PUBLISHING

When your content is added and you’re ready to launch the new page, click the blue ‘Publish’ button on the right-hand side of the page. By publishing the page, it is live on your website and visitors can now access.

ADDING TO YOUR MENU

By default, WordPress doesn’t automatically add your new page to the menu, you need to do this manually.

Head to ‘Appearance’ > ‘Menus’. On the left-hand side, there is a ‘Pages’ box, your new page will be shown under the ‘most recent’ tab. Tick the box beside the page name and click the ‘Add to Menu’ button. Your new page should now be added to your menu as the last link.
